A Domain-Organized Index of Stewardship Scenarios

The Applied Stewardship Case Library gathers reflective scenarios exploring how stewardship principles unfold within complex real-world situations.

The Level I cases introduce core stewardship dilemmas that commonly appear in leadership, organizations, families, and communities.

Each case presents a scenario where individuals must navigate competing responsibilities, incomplete information, and evolving relationships.

Rather than providing definitive answers, the cases invite careful observation and reflection on the patterns that shape human systems.

Together, these twelve scenarios form a developmental arc that helps readers recognize how stewardship responsibilities emerge in different domains of life.

The Level I Stewardship Learning Arc

The cases are organized across six domains of stewardship practice.

Each domain contains two cases that explore different aspects of the same arena of responsibility.

Leadership & Governance

Situations involving leadership authority, institutional responsibility, and ethical influence.

Case 01 — The Founder’s Blind Spot

A steward serving within a values-driven organization begins to notice subtle shifts between founding principles and present leadership behavior. The case explores loyalty, responsibility, and institutional integrity.

Open Case

Case 03 — The Loyal Lieutenant

A trusted second-in-command must navigate growing concerns about a leader’s decisions while balancing loyalty, responsibility, and organizational stability.

Open Case

Systems & Organizational Dynamics

Situations where structural forces, incentives, and group dynamics shape collective outcomes.

Case 02 — The Culture of Quiet Avoidance

The Culture of Quiet Avoidance examines how organizations that value harmony and positivity may unintentionally create environments where important disagreements are withheld, quietly shifting decision-making away from open dialogue and institutional learning.

Open Case

Case 04 — The Quiet Incentive

A steward gradually realizes that an organization’s internal reward structures are quietly encouraging behaviors that conflict with its publicly stated values. The case explores how incentives shape culture in ways leadership may not immediately recognize.

Open Case

Mentorship & Generational Stewardship

Situations involving leadership development and ethical influence across generations.

Case 05 — The Unready Successor

A community preparing for leadership transition begins discussing succession, yet the individual expected to inherit responsibility may not yet possess the developmental readiness required. The case explores mentorship, timing, and stewardship of succession.

Open Case

Case 06 — The Teacher’s Influence

A mentor gradually realizes that their influence over students carries deeper responsibility than initially expected. The case examines ethical influence, developmental readiness, and the responsibilities of teachers.

Open Case

Family & Intergenerational Stewardship

Situations involving responsibility across generations within families and close relational systems.

Case 07 — The Sovereign Child

A parent committed to raising independent thinkers begins confronting the tension between guiding a child responsibly and allowing space for autonomy. The case explores authority, protection, and the development of sovereign agency.

Open Case

Case 08 — The Inherited Pattern

A steward begins recognizing how unexamined family dynamics are quietly shaping present-day decisions. The case explores awareness, responsibility, and the possibility of breaking inherited relational patterns.

Open Case

Emotional Intelligence & Relational Stewardship

Situations where emotional awareness, projection, communication, and boundary-setting shape stewardship decisions.

Case 09 — The Projection Spiral

A disagreement within a leadership team gradually intensifies as emotional projections distort perceptions of events. The case explores how stewards recognize and interrupt relational escalation.

Open Case

Case 10 — The Conversation That Almost Didn’t Happen

Two stewards sense growing tension between them but hesitate to address it directly. The case explores the courage required for honest dialogue and the cost of avoiding difficult conversations.

Open Case

Community & Collective Stewardship

Situations involving responsibility within groups, councils, and shared communities.

Case 11 — The Fractured Council

A governing council begins fragmenting around competing interpretations of mission and authority. The case explores how stewards hold both truth and cohesion during conflict.

Open Case

Case 12 — The Stewardship Commons

The Stewardship Commons explores how a collaborative initiative built on voluntary participation begins experiencing an uneven distribution of responsibility, raising the question of how communities sustain shared work while preserving trust and collective ownership.

• small group dialogue through Steward Circles
• leadership development workshops
• governance and organizational training sessions

Each case includes:

• an online narrative

A Note on Stewardship

Stewardship is not defined by formal authority alone.

It emerges whenever individuals recognize that their choices influence the well-being of others and the systems they inhabit.

These cases invite readers to explore how that responsibility unfolds across the many arenas of human life.
