People encounter its work across different cultures, languages, political systems, legal traditions, and ways of understanding the world.
That reach carries a responsibility: to remain intellectually coherent and ethically grounded while respecting the different contexts in which the Archive is encountered.
This principle describes how we hold that responsibility.
One Living Archive
The Living Archive maintains a coherent editorial and intellectual standard across its work.
Its purpose is not to advance a political ideology, prescribe a worldview, or adapt its understanding of human systems to the preferences of any particular government, institution, or interest.
The Archive may examine difficult, contested, or uncomfortable questions. The inclusion of a perspective, argument, historical account, or field of inquiry does not by itself constitute institutional endorsement.
We seek to preserve the integrity of the work while allowing readers to encounter complexity without being told in advance what they must conclude.
Respect for People and Places
The Living Archive recognizes that people encounter its work within very different cultural and legal environments.
We seek to treat people with dignity, and to approach cultures, societies, institutions, and traditions as subjects worthy of understanding rather than objects to be judged, exploited, or reduced to stereotypes.
Where the Living Archive intentionally establishes a service, transaction, partnership, or other activity within a jurisdiction, it takes applicable legal and regulatory requirements seriously.
Global accessibility does not, by itself, mean that the Living Archive has established a legal or operational presence in every country from which it may be accessed.
Law and Editorial Integrity
The Living Archive distinguishes between legal obligation and voluntary editorial preference.
Where applicable law governs our activities, we comply with it. At the same time, we do not treat political pressure, commercial interest, cultural preference, or the desire to avoid disagreement as equivalent to a legal requirement.
Where a lawful authority requires a restriction, we seek, where reasonably possible, to understand the legal basis, scope, and jurisdiction of that requirement and to respond proportionately.
Where a restriction is unavoidable, our preference is for the narrowest intervention necessary rather than unnecessary alteration of the wider Archive.
Where laws or legitimate obligations conflict across jurisdictions, the matter should be addressed through deliberate institutional review rather than improvised editorial decisions.
Reader Sovereignty
The Living Archive exists to improve understanding, not to manufacture agreement.
We therefore seek to preserve the reader’s capacity to question, compare, interpret, and reach their own considered conclusions.
The Archive does not knowingly use deception, coercion, or manipulative design to secure agreement, participation, or purchase.
Its navigational systems are intended to help people orient themselves—not to replace their judgment.
Integrity of Interpretation
The Living Archive distinguishes, as clearly as possible, between:
- established information and interpretation;
- institutional position and individual perspective;
- evidence and hypothesis;
- editorial curation and automated assistance.
Where interpretation is involved, we seek to make that distinction intelligible rather than presenting interpretation as unquestionable fact.
The Archive also recognizes that understanding develops. A commitment to intellectual integrity includes the willingness to revise, clarify, or correct the work when better understanding warrants it.
Responsible Use of Technology
Technology, including artificial intelligence, may assist the Living Archive in analysis, navigation, organization, and interpretation.
Technology does not constitute the institution’s authority.
Where AI materially participates in an experience or interpretation, the Living Archive seeks to represent that involvement honestly and to maintain appropriate human and institutional responsibility for how its outputs are used.
Personal information is not treated as a resource to be collected simply because it can be collected. Information should have a defined purpose, and unnecessary collection should be avoided.
Accessibility and Inclusion
Understanding should not depend unnecessarily upon a person’s physical ability, technology, language, or circumstances.
The Living Archive therefore seeks to make its published work, navigation, and digital experiences reasonably accessible to the widest practical range of people.
Accessibility is understood not merely as a technical requirement, but as part of the institution’s responsibility to make understanding available.
A Living Standard
This principle is not intended to anticipate every circumstance that a globally accessible institution may encounter.
The Living Archive will continue to develop more specific standards for privacy and data, responsible AI, accessibility, jurisdictional matters, and other areas as the institution’s reach and responsibilities evolve.
The underlying commitment remains simple:
To remain open to the world without surrendering intellectual integrity; to respect law without confusing compliance with conviction; and to help people understand complexity without taking away their sovereignty to think for themselves.
That is the standard by which the Living Archive seeks to meet the world.
