For much of his early life, academic success had quietly become the architecture of his future.
From his earliest years at school, strong grades had consistently opened new opportunities. Recognition became familiar. Scholarships followed naturally. Hard work appeared to confirm a simple understanding of how life functioned.
Effort created opportunity.
Opportunity created hope.
That understanding remained largely unquestioned until university.
The engineering institute he entered gathered many of the country’s strongest students into the same classrooms. Young people who had each excelled within their own schools now competed alongside others whose abilities were equally exceptional.
The work became far more demanding than anything he had previously experienced.
He studied as diligently as he knew how.
It was not enough.
After his second year, he lost the academic scholarship that had made university financially possible.
