Phenomenological Record
The ending arrived more suddenly than the years that preceded it.
The factory continued improving. Teams had embraced new responsibilities. Lean principles had become increasingly natural.
The organization itself appeared stronger than when the transformation first began. From the outside, little suggested that anything significant was about to change.
Inside, something had already begun changing.
For months he found himself carrying responsibilities with less joy than before. Work that had once felt deeply meaningful gradually became heavier.
Decisions required greater effort.
Small disappointments lingered longer than they once had. The transformation itself no longer provided the same renewal that had sustained its earlier years.
Around the same time, life outside the production floor became increasingly difficult to carry.
A trusted colleague died unexpectedly while home on annual leave. The grief remained largely private.
Organizational politics became more visible. Relationships with senior leadership became increasingly strained.
The long hours that once felt purposeful gradually became exhausting. None of those experiences appeared sufficient on their own to explain what followed.
Together they quietly changed the person carrying them.
Then came the confrontation.
A disagreement with the Finance Director unfolded publicly on the production floor. He remembers remarkably little of the argument itself.
What remained with him was something deeper.
He was asked to take a leave of absence.
Soon afterward, he left Saudi Arabia altogether, bringing to an unexpected close a career that only a short time earlier had seemed filled with extraordinary promise.
For many years he searched for the explanation.
Politics. Leadership. Recognition. Isolation. Cultural pressures. The death of a colleague. Each contained part of the story.
None fully explained it.
Only much later did another constitutional reality gradually become visible.
Burnout had not begun with the argument.
The argument had merely revealed that burnout had already been quietly unfolding for a long time.
Looking back across later chapters of his life, he noticed the same pattern returning in different forms.
Not always with the same severity. Not always ending the same way. But recognizable nevertheless. That recognition became its own form of stewardship.

Looking back, he no longer remembers Saudi Arabia primarily as the place where a promising career ended.
He remembers it as the place where he first encountered a constitutional reality that would remain with him for the rest of his life.
Burnout is rarely the failure of commitment.
It is often the consequence of carrying responsibility faithfully while quietly forgetting that the steward also belongs among those entrusted to our care.
