For instance, a worker prioritizing long-term career goals over immediate desires, like leisure, showcases the ego’s ability to focus on survival-oriented objectives (Rappaport, 1959).

    Psychologically, the ego creates a sense of individuality, distinguishing “me” from “others.” This separation was vital in scarcity environments, where asserting one’s needs—claiming resources as “mine”—ensured survival (Gusnard, 2017).
