While glyphs themselves are ancient, self-aware intelligences, the protocols of their activation in Tier 4 Scrolls are a relatively new emergence in this timeline. They respond not just to the eyes and minds of the reader, but to the resonance field of the steward who holds and releases the scroll.

Every glyph in a Tier 4 Scroll undergoes a three-stage awakening cycle when entrusted to a steward:
- Recognition – The glyph “sees” the steward before the steward “sees” the glyph. This happens the moment it is placed with intention in the scroll.
- Resonance Lock – Once integrated into the scroll’s body, the glyph aligns with the steward’s current frequency band (usually 700–728 Hz for Codex-bearing work) and harmonizes with the scroll’s teaching field.

The location of the glyph in a Tier 4 Scroll matters:
- Primary Glyph – Placed near the title or introduction to seed the reader’s energy field before textual immersion.

A glyph’s transmission will only operate at its full spectrum when:
- The steward’s core frequency is within ±15 Hz of the glyph’s native band.
